Composting Toilets Reduce The Strain On Septic Tanks
There are many reasons why Tamati chose composting toilets:
- To be able to manage our own waste and not have it run through miles of pipes to a large treatment facility which consumes a lot of energy.
- To reduce the amount of water we consume. We live in a high bushfire risk area so water is precious at times, it can get quite dry leading up to the summer rains too.
- To turn our waste into compost and return it back to the land in a beneficial way.
- The simplicity of them. No cisterns that leak, no blocked toilets, easy to use.
- To reduce the strain on our septic system.
We have a Clivus Multrum CM10 installed as our main toilet and the Nature Loo Classic 850 installed in our ensuite.
Everyone that isn’t familiar with composting toilets is initially a bit wary because they are different. They’re not used to seeing a dark hole with no water. Some of the kids are scared to use it because they think they might fall in. But once they use it they understand the simplicity and functionality of one. People are also really surprised at how much they don’t smell. The extraction fans work really well at drawing the air down and out so that it doesn’t smell.

What do you love most about your loo?
I think the fact that it doesn’t smell. The fans work great at expelling even the most discrete farts. 🙂
Would you recommend a composting toilet to friends and family?
Yes, definitely. It is one of the highlights of our house. It has so many benefits and I talk about them whenever we have new family or friends visit.
